Hey friends! First of all, a happy new year 😀 (Until when is it acceptable to wish people a happy new year?) I still have colleagues starting their emails off with their well wishes. So that kind of justifies me writing this kind of blog post while we’re nearly an entire week into the new year. While it was super satisfying that the 1st
of January was a Monday, it kind of meant that I felt propelled straight into a work week, and that I didn’t yet manage to take the time to sit down and reflect properly on the previous year and the year ahead. That’s why I’m about to share my weekend plans with you. Now introducing: the Year Compass. A workbook that contains brilliant questions to allow you to reflect on the previous year and help you set goals for the year ahead. Yup, this is my weekend plan.
This is an interview series with women that inspire me. Women that are doing cool shit with their lives. The Sunshine Sisters of the world! These interviews intend to share real life stories about how these women were able to diverge from the beaten path and follow their dreams. Learn how weaknesses were turned intro strengths and how breakdowns were actually preparations for breakthroughs!
Today I would like to introduce Merel from Blackbirds and Cakes. I freaking admire this girlboss for several reasons: she posts the most delicious vegan recipes on her website (for stunning cakes and budget friendly meals!), has a successful business delivering these cakes for weddings and parties AND somehow manages to keep up a weekly blog next to a fulltime job. I’m interviewing her partially for selfish reasons: I want to know how she does it so I can become more consistent with my own blog 😛
I was recently asked to join a (money) mandala, which is also known as a blessing loom or gifting circle. At first, it seemed like an incredibly simple way to manifest financial abundance. It was sold as an ancient system used by women in African tribes to support each other. And you know.. we all have some debts to pay off, so I tried to not overthink it. I wanted to remain enthusiastic (read: ignorant), because it seemed like such a miracle, so I wanted to focus on the positive side of it. Or like its members will tell you: embrace it with trust and surrender, because it’s about more than just the money. And it’s exactly this new-agey, manifest-your-life and law-of-attraction language that is used to draw in a certain crowd. But are they really manifesting financial abundance or is it just an old fashioned pyramid scheme that’s been rebranded?
I was first blown away by this dish –haha, can I even call it that?– when I was living in Bangkok, and frequenting Broccoli Revolution
because it was such a sweet place to work AND they have super healthy food. Later on in the year I had it again: in New York at my first vegan fast food joint called by CHLOE., and I realised I should probably figure out the recipe. And guess what, it’s super freaking easy! Literally a blend-and-go recipe. And for my version you don’t need any fancy ingredients, except for some nutritional yeast, so it’s pretty much my new go-to comfort food that’s really good for you.
By now, we’ve all heard something about overfishing in one form or another. As a conscious consumer, you really want to try and make the right choices each time you’re in the supermarket. But with so many fish species and fishing methods, how are you supposed to remember what the good choices are, and which are absolute NO-GO’s?
There is SO much information out there, that the Monterey Bay Aquarium has bundled all of it in the Seafood Watch app. While I applaud the initiative, I also understand the struggles of having to constantly delete photos on your phone to take new ones, let alone having to download an app for everything. And unfortunately, it’s not as easy as blindly trusting the certifications either. I have therefore come up with some easy to remember rules of thumb for your next seafood purchase.

Today I would like to introduce Clare from Freebird Flow, whose sustainability/adventure blog is coming soon! She’s one of those rare and special people in my life that I instantly formed a life-long friendship with. We bonded over the cheapest available drink in a secret Bangkok music venue (that’s how it felt, at least, when we needed to use COORDINATES on Google Maps to find it), whilst nerding out on a conversation about bamboo toothbrushes. Our paths crossed again a short while later on Koh Phangan, where we shared my bungalow and some super interesting insights on feminine wisdom and the meaning of life. What fascinates me about her is her courage and determination to live her life on her own terms. Who says that a 9 to 5, for 11 months a year, is the way we’re supposed to live?
Ever had a brilliant idea that you knew was going to change the world? Did you get stuck on how on earth you were going to fund your amazing project? Or how to gather a team of people with the same level of enthusiasm to push your idea forwards? Did you then give up? This was my reality for the longest time, until I attended Merit360. My biggest takeaway from this conference is that if you have a great idea, backed up by a well thought out project plan and business model, then “getting your funding is the easy bit.” –Bernie Hollywood. I have three letters for you: C.S.R.
Coming from an international school background, I thought I had seen and heard it all. That I had a basal knowledge of most cultures, but man… was I wrong. And man… did I have a laugh. On the first evening I met Terisa from Nepal. We had just done some energisers, and were getting to know each other. Terisa asked me if we used maps
in my country. I was pretty sure I misunderstood her, so I asked for clarification. Yeap, she really meant maps, because she was astonished that people in other countries needed them to get around their own cities! In Kathmandu, everybody apparently knows their city like the back of their hands, and if somebody were to tell you to meet them somewhere, you would know how to get there one way or another. Fun fact.
Have you ever gotten a brilliant idea where you’re like: “HOLY SH*T, this is how I’m going to change the world!!! But wait, that’s so freaking huge and complicated, I have no idea how to do it, and it’s just me by myself, so too bad, it’ll probably never happen.” Today, I got one of the best pieces of advice that will help me tackle literally any goal I have in my life.
